Missy & Billy's Skylandia Park Wedding: A Tented Celebration in the Pines in Tahoe City
Missy has been coming to Lake Tahoe her whole life. Her grandfather bought a house on the West Shore nearly thirty years ago for one reason: so that all of his family would keep showing up in the same place and build a few decades of memories there.
It worked. Her mom is one of eight. There are 26 grandchildren.
So when Missy and Billy got married at Skylandia Park in Tahoe City, under the pines with the lake right there, it wasn't a destination wedding. It was the place, finally full of everyone they love.
Why Skylandia Park Is One of the Best Lake Tahoe Wedding Venues for a Tented Celebration
Skylandia Park sits on Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City, where the North and West Shores meet. It's a public park, with a beach and swimming area, a pier, a meadow, picnic areas, and woodland trails running back through the pines.
That last part is what makes it work for a wedding. The ceremony happened in the trees with wooden chairs in rows and the lake sitting right behind the aisle, and the reception went up under a white sailcloth tent set into the same stretch of forest. From the air, it's a bright tent in a clearing with Tahoe stretching out beyond the treeline.
It's also a blank canvas, which is the trade-off. A public park isn't a resort. There's no ballroom, no in-house catering, no chairs waiting in a closet. Everything comes in, which means more vendors and more planning than an all-inclusive venue — and in exchange you get a setting almost nobody else can offer.
For a couple whose whole brief was "minimalist on the decor, maximalist on the vibes," that was the right trade.
How They Found Their Lake Tahoe Wedding Venue on Instagram
Missy never wanted a fairytale wedding. Ask her as a kid what her wedding would look like and she'd have told you she was getting married on top of Eagle Rock, and then everybody would jump in the lake.
Then she came across a photo on Instagram of a wedding set up in the woods by the water, and that was it. She found Karen tagged in the post, reached out immediately, and the search was over.
When she showed the photo to her family and closest friends, every single reaction was a version of the same thing: there could be no better venue for Missy.
She put it simply. There's nothing more perfect than being surrounded by her beloved pine trees — is there any better smell? — looking out at the lake.
Karen at Tahoe by Design planned the day, and she's the reason the Instagram photo turned into a booked date. On a site like this one, where everything arrives on a truck, the planner isn't a luxury line in the budget. She's the person who makes a park into a wedding.
Why They Chose Lake Tahoe: Three Decades of Family Summers
Thirty years of one family in one house adds up to a specific list, and Missy can recite hers.
Card games on the deck. Hours on the pier with a book, and jumping in. The memory game and backgammon with her grandpa. Family hikes. Endless woods with her cousins and the forts they built out there. Everyone piling into the living room for a VHS. Crawdadding. Snowball fights. New Year's weekends with the whole extended family.
She and Billy come out for at least a week every summer, and she's spent those trips handing him the childhood version of this place while they build their own on top of it.
Her favorite thing about Tahoe, she says, is seeing it through someone else's eyes for the first time. A wedding with Billy's family and a guest list of friends who'd never been was about the best possible version of that.
Getting Ready Near the Lake in Tahoe City
The morning happened in a house near the lake, which is how most Skylandia weddings work: you're renting a park, so the getting-ready space is wherever your people are staying.
Missy's gown hung in a window of a white shingled house. She got ready in a room with a wood stove and good window light, put her earrings in, and stood in the living room under a chandelier with the train spread out behind her.
Billy got ready outside in the pines with his guys in black tuxedos, and there's the standard frame of three men all working on one tie at once.
Their details sat on olive green: white pointed heels, the invitation with a mountain illustration on it, a green velvet ring box, and a boutonniere.
Wedding Party Portraits on a Lake Tahoe Pier
Before the ceremony, we took the wedding party out onto the pier.
The pier runs straight out over the water, so you get the whole party walking it with the lake underneath and the mountains stacked across the far shore, and then the two of them at the end of it with nothing but blue in every direction.
The bridesmaids wore sage and olive green. Missy's bouquet was white blooms with blue accents and eucalyptus, which against that water looks exactly the way you'd hope.
A Forest Wedding Ceremony Overlooking Lake Tahoe
They got married in the trees with the lake behind them.
Wooden chairs in rows on the forest floor, pines running up out of frame on both sides, and that specific Tahoe blue filling the gaps between the trunks. No arch. At a site like this one, an arch would be in the way of the only thing anyone came to look at.
Missy came up the aisle on the arm of a gentleman in a navy suit, flower girls scattered petals ahead of her, and Billy waited in a black tux.
Her best friend officiated. That was the one thing they'd pointed to from the start as what would make the ceremony theirs — someone who knows everything about them and has been alongside the whole relationship, rather than someone reading from a script.
A Sailcloth Tent Wedding Reception in the Pines
Dinner happened under a white sailcloth tent pitched in a clearing in the trees, with the center poles running up through the middle and string lights strung the length of it.
Long tables, white linens, greenery down the middle, blue glassware, and coral and orange blooms — the one real pop of color in an otherwise restrained setup. Toasts happened with the trees going dark behind the tent walls.
Missy had told us she's firmly Type B, and that linen colors and flatware were never going to be the thing she agonized over. Her priorities were a beautiful venue, great music, and a big party. You can see that logic in the room: the decor stays quiet and the setting and the people do the rest.
Then the sun went down, the string lights took over, and the dance floor filled. A tent in the woods at night is one of the better rooms we get to shoot — the canvas bounces the light back down onto everyone, and the forest outside goes completely black, so the whole party glows in a clearing.
Sunset Wedding Portraits in the Pines at Skylandia Park
Late in the evening we got Missy and Billy back out into the trees while the sun came through low and sideways.
The light at Skylandia in the last hour does something specific: it comes in flat between the trunks instead of down through the canopy, so it flares between the trees and lights up the dust and the needles. We shot into it for most of those, and the aerial frames from right after show the lake going silver and the tent glowing in the clearing.
Planning a Wedding at Skylandia Park: What to Know
Can You Get Married at Skylandia Park in Tahoe City?
Yes. Skylandia Park is managed by the Tahoe City Public Utility District, and the facility can be reserved through their online rental catalog. Reach out early to check availability and confirm exactly what a wedding requires, since a park rental isn't the same as booking a wedding venue.
What Are the Rental Hours at Skylandia Park?
Rentals run 8am to 10pm, from May 1 through October 31, weather permitting. That 10pm end time decides your whole timeline, so build the day backward from it.
What's Already at Skylandia Park, and What Do You Bring In?
The park has a beach and swimming area, a pier, a meadow, woodland trails, picnic areas, restrooms, and BBQs. Everything else — tent, tables, chairs, catering, bar, lighting, power, dance floor — comes in with your vendors. Budget and plan accordingly, and hire people who've worked a build-from-scratch site before.
Do You Need a Tent for a Park Wedding in Tahoe?
It's a good idea. There's no indoor backup at a park, and Tahoe weather turns fast. Missy and Billy used a sailcloth tent, which handled dinner and dancing and also gave the reception a room of its own once the sun went down.
What Should You Know About Fire Restrictions?
Skylandia is in a high wildfire danger zone, and the North Tahoe Fire Protection District can restrict BBQ use without advance notice. Anything involving open flame, including candles and sparkler exits, is worth clearing with the district and your rental contact rather than assuming.
How Much Decor Does a Lake Tahoe Forest Wedding Need?
Not much. Missy's whole philosophy was minimalist on the decor, maximalist on the vibes, and at a site with pines on three sides and the lake on the fourth, that's the correct read. Put the budget into the setting, the food, and the music.
What Missy & Billy Said About Their Lake Tahoe Wedding Photos
Here's what they sent us after the wedding:
“Wow wow wow! Rob and Marie were the most incredible team to work with!! They are so fun and loving and you immediately can tell how much care they put into the whole process. We fell in love with Marie after our initial call and immediately trusted that they were the perfect duo for our big day. This was confirmed again when we did our engagement shoot with Rob in Tahoe - he made us feel comfortable immediately and made the whole afternoon so fun and easy! The pictures we got back were incredible and we were obsessed. When Rob tells you he’s a nerd about lighting, believe him and trust it - the pictures will be stunning. They made the wedding day feel like a breeze, hanging out with old friends. They are truly genuine people who love what they do and it shows. Our initial preview shots came in just days after the wedding and we could not love them more. They truly captured the love and joy we felt throughout the whole day. We could not be happier with our choice to work with them!”
